Notes and concise summaries
Select relevant information and fit it into the grammar and limits of the task.
What you will learn
- Complete notes with a grammatically suitable phrase.
- Separate main points from supporting detail.
Read around a gap
The words before and after a gap tell you what type of answer is needed. A gap after 'weekly' may need a noun; a gap after 'to' may need a verb. Check agreement and whether the completed note makes sense.
Follow the task's word limit and instructions about using words from the passage. A relevant answer can lose credit if it includes unnecessary extra words or changes the intended meaning.
Summarise by selecting
A summary is a focused selection of the main relevant points, not every detail and not your opinion. First identify the requested focus, such as classroom activities or benefits. Exclude points outside that focus even if they are interesting.
When selecting two statements, evaluate each independently against the text. Do not assume an option is correct merely because another selected option is correct.
Worked example
Read: 'Students measure rainfall each morning and compare their records at the end of the week.' Complete: 'Students compare their rainfall ____ weekly.'
Show the worked solution
- The gap needs a plural noun after 'rainfall'.
- The text identifies what is compared: records.
- Substitute it and read the complete note.
Answer records
Common mistakes
- Do not copy an entire sentence into a one-word gap.
- A summary should not introduce an explanation absent from the source.
What can you explain now?
A passage describes students measuring temperature, graphing results and selling cakes at a fundraiser. Which two are data activities?
Compare with the explanation
Measuring temperature and graphing results
The fundraiser may be a real activity but does not match the specified focus on data.
