Planning a comparative essay
Build a shared line of argument rather than two disconnected summaries.
Before you begin
- Comparing viewpoints
- Analytical paragraphs
Choose a defensible comparison
A comparative thesis identifies a meaningful similarity or difference and explains why it matters. Establish a shared basis, such as the treatment of responsibility or the use of memory. Avoid claiming the texts are identical because both mention a broad topic. The strongest comparison recognises differences within an apparent similarity.
Organise paragraphs around ideas
A point-by-point structure examines both texts on one issue within a paragraph or linked pair of paragraphs. Balance does not require equal word counts, but each comparison needs adequate evidence. Use transitions that state the relationship, then connect it to the overall thesis. Check that the conclusion synthesises the comparison rather than simply listing it again.
Worked example
Text A presents a journey as escape; Text B presents a journey as a return to responsibility. Plan one comparative paragraph.
Show the worked solution
- Use the shared issue 'what the journey means' as the paragraph's focus.
- Analyse relevant evidence from each text instead of retelling both plots.
- Explain how their contrasting purposes change the meaning of movement.
Both texts link movement with personal change, but one associates change with departure and the other with accepting ties.
Try it yourself
Which is the strongest basis for a comparative paragraph?
Common mistakes
- Do not force a similarity by overlooking a major qualification.
What can you explain now?
Draft a comparative thesis for two hypothetical articles that both favour public transport but differ over whether price or reliability should be improved first.
Compare with the explanation
Both articles support public transport, but their different priorities reveal competing explanations of what prevents people from using it.
The thesis preserves agreement while making the disagreement meaningful. Supporting paragraphs should compare evidence for price and reliability.
