Main ideas and concise summaries
Keep the central meaning while leaving out examples that are not essential.
Before you begin
- Identifying a paragraph's topic
- Paraphrasing a short sentence
Distinguish topic from main idea
The topic is what a text is about; the main idea is what the text says about that topic. 'School gardens' is a topic, while 'school gardens can connect science lessons with everyday observations' is a main idea. Notice repeated concepts and how examples support a larger point, rather than choosing the most colourful detail.
Preserve meaning without adding judgment
A summary is shorter than the source and uses your own sentence structure while preserving important claims and qualifications. Keep words such as 'may' or 'some' when they limit the original claim. Leave out your evaluation unless the task asks for it. Check your summary against the whole text, not just its first sentence.
Worked example
Summarise: 'The class garden gave pupils a place to measure plant growth. They also noticed insects visiting flowers. Rain sometimes interrupted the work, but the teacher used those days to discuss weather.'
Show the worked solution
- The examples concern science learning through the garden.
- Combine plant measurement, insects and weather into a broader idea.
- Avoid adding a claim that the garden improved test scores.
The class garden supported practical science learning, including observations of plants, insects and weather.
Try it yourself
Which preserves the meaning of 'Some students may benefit from short breaks'?
Common mistakes
- A summary should not quietly strengthen the source's claim.
What can you explain now?
Summarise: 'The bus was faster than walking on most days, but traffic made its arrival time uncertain.'
Compare with the explanation
The bus was usually quicker than walking but less predictable because of traffic.
A faithful summary keeps both the usual speed advantage and the limitation. It must not change 'most days' into 'always'.
