Job enrichment and motivation
Explain how a change in work design may influence motivation under specific conditions.
What you will learn
- Distinguish enrichment from enlargement and rotation.
- Evaluate giving employees greater responsibility.
Different changes alter different aspects of work
Job enrichment adds responsibility, autonomy or more meaningful decision-making. Job enlargement adds tasks at a similar level of responsibility. Job rotation moves employees between roles or tasks.
A change described as 'more work' is not necessarily enrichment. Look for a deeper role, authority or responsibility rather than simply a longer task list.
Explain the mechanism and conditions
Greater authority can increase ownership, recognition and engagement. It may also improve decisions when employees have relevant local knowledge. These benefits depend on appropriate skills, information and support.
Some employees may feel overloaded or prefer clearer boundaries. A developed evaluation considers training, workload, organisational culture and the type of work before predicting an outcome.
Worked example
A production employee is allowed to plan the work sequence and approve minor quality decisions. Identify and evaluate the approach.
Show the worked solution
- The role gains authority and responsibility, not merely extra repetitive tasks.
- This is job enrichment and may increase ownership.
- Its success depends on training and suitable decision boundaries.
Answer Job enrichment, with benefits conditional on support and capability
Common mistakes
- Do not confuse more tasks with more responsibility.
- A motivation method does not affect every employee identically.
What can you explain now?
An employee moves between three jobs each week without gaining authority. What is this?
Compare with the explanation
Job rotation
The main change is movement between tasks, not greater responsibility within one role.
