SWOT and strategic judgement

Classify evidence accurately, then use it to support a decision rather than merely filling four boxes.

What you will learn

  • Distinguish internal from external factors.
  • Turn a SWOT observation into a strategic implication.

Use two distinctions

Strengths and weaknesses are internal characteristics of the business. Opportunities and threats arise from the external environment. Each can help or harm the business relative to its objectives.

A well-trained workforce may be a strength; an emerging market may be an opportunity. A competitor's expansion is external, so it is not the firm's internal weakness.

Classification is not the conclusion

After classifying a factor, explain its likely effect and connect it to an option. A competitor opening nearby may threaten sales, but the actual impact depends on differentiation, customer loyalty and market growth.

SWOT is a starting framework, not a numerical ranking. Prioritise evidence by significance and likelihood rather than assuming all listed points deserve equal weight.

Put the idea to work

Worked example

A larger competitor plans to open next door. Classify this in SWOT and explain one strategic implication.

Show the worked solution
  1. The change happens outside the business, so it is external.
  2. It may divert customers, making it a threat.
  3. The business might strengthen differentiation, but should assess costs and customer preferences before choosing a response.

Answer An external threat requiring a context-based response

Common mistakes

  • A rival's strength is not automatically your internal weakness.
  • Listing SWOT factors is not the same as evaluating a strategy.
Recall without your notes

What can you explain now?

Where would poor staff training inside the firm belong?

Compare with the explanation

Weakness

It is an internal limitation that may hinder the business's objectives.
