Metaphor and layered interpretation

Explore a comparison's implications while keeping an interpretation anchored in the text.

What you will learn

  • Explain the relationship in a metaphor.
  • Develop more than a device label.

A metaphor transfers associations

A metaphor describes one thing in terms of another, drawing attention to selected similarities. Calling memory a room may evoke containment, privacy or inaccessibility. The surrounding verbs and modifiers determine which associations are most persuasive.

A metaphor rarely means that every property of the comparison applies. Analysis needs selection and explanation rather than a literal reconstruction.

Build and test an interpretation

Begin with a precise quotation, identify the implied relationship, then test your reading against the rest of the extract. An alternative interpretation is useful when it reveals ambiguity or tension, not merely because every word could mean anything.

Distinguish a supported possibility from a claim of authorial intention you cannot establish. You can explain what the language invites a reader to consider.

Put the idea to work

Worked example

Analyse the original line: 'Her hope was a paper boat, brave on the widening river.'

Show the worked solution
  1. The boat comparison suggests movement but also fragility.
  2. 'Brave' gives the fragile object a quality of persistence.
  3. The widening river enlarges the challenge, so the line combines vulnerability with resolve.

Answer Hope is presented as fragile yet persistent against growing uncertainty.

Common mistakes

  • Do not treat metaphors as literal statements.
  • A second interpretation still needs evidence.
Recall without your notes

What can you explain now?

What does 'locked' add to a metaphor describing memory as a room?

Compare with the explanation

A sense of restricted access or concealment

A room alone suggests a contained space; the lock makes access difficult or controlled.
