Narrative perspective and reliability
Separate who tells a story from how far their account can be trusted.
What you will learn
- Identify first-person narration.
- Use evidence to discuss unreliability.
Perspective limits access
A first-person narrator speaks as 'I' and offers an account shaped by their knowledge, memory and values. This can create intimacy while limiting access to other characters' thoughts. Third-person narration can also be limited; it is not automatically omniscient.
The narrator is a constructed voice, not necessarily the author. Avoid attributing a narrator's claims directly to the writer.
Reliability is an interpretive question
Contradictions, admitted lies, self-correction or gaps between events and interpretation can make an account unreliable. First-person narration alone is not proof of dishonesty.
Explain how unreliability affects the reader: it may require reconstruction, create uncertainty or expose self-deception. Keep the strength of your conclusion proportionate to the evidence.
Worked example
Read the original narration: 'I had never entered the study. At least, that is what I told the officer; the smell of its old books still followed me.' Analyse reliability.
Show the worked solution
- The narrator distinguishes an earlier statement from the present account.
- A vivid memory of the room challenges the claim never to have entered.
- The contradiction encourages the reader to question the narrator's testimony.
Answer The first-person account suggests concealment and invites distrust.
Common mistakes
- First person does not automatically mean unreliable.
- Do not confuse a narrator with the author.
What can you explain now?
A narrator admits that a childhood memory may be inaccurate. Must this prove deliberate lying?
Compare with the explanation
No
Unreliability can arise from limited memory rather than intentional deception.
