Primary and secondary research
Choose evidence that answers a business question and examine how it was collected.
What you will learn
- Distinguish primary from secondary research.
- Identify limitations of a sample.
New data or existing data?
Primary research collects new data for the investigation, such as interviews, surveys or observations. Secondary research uses existing data, such as published reports or past sales records. The distinction is about the data's origin, not whether it is numerical.
Primary research can be tailored to a question but may take time and money. Secondary research may be quicker but may not match the population, date or purpose required.
Quality matters more than the label
A small or unrepresentative sample can produce a misleading picture. Interviewing only existing fans of a product may overstate wider demand. Leading questions can influence responses.
A useful evaluation checks relevance, sample selection, timing and possible bias. Neither primary nor secondary research is automatically accurate.
Worked example
A bakery interviews shoppers about a proposed product. Identify the research type and one limitation if all interviews happen outside its own shop.
Show the worked solution
- The bakery is collecting new information, so it is primary research.
- People outside its shop may already prefer its products.
- That sample may not represent the wider market.
Answer Primary research, with possible sample-selection bias
Common mistakes
- Online information is not automatically secondary: a new online survey is primary.
- More responses do not eliminate biased sampling.
What can you explain now?
A firm analyses last year's published industry report. Is this primary research?
Compare with the explanation
No; it is secondary research
The information already existed before the current investigation.
