Building an analytical paragraph

Link a claim about a text to close evidence and an explained interpretation.

Before you begin

  • Focused paragraphs
  • Using short quotations

Make a claim that can be supported

An analytical claim says something about how a text creates meaning. It differs from a plot summary, which says what happens. Keep the claim narrow enough for the paragraph's evidence. Select a short phrase or detail that directly supports it, and give enough context for the reader to understand the reference.

Explain the significance of the detail

After presenting evidence, examine a word, pattern or contrast and link it back to the claim. Quotation length does not equal analytical depth. You may acknowledge another possible interpretation when it helps refine yours. End by advancing the argument, not by announcing that you have found a technique.

See the reasoning

Worked example

Write a brief analysis of this original detail: 'She rehearsed the greeting, then let the telephone ring.'

Show the worked solution
  1. Claim that the character appears caught between wanting contact and avoiding it.
  2. Use 'rehearsed' as evidence of preparation.
  3. Contrast that preparation with letting the telephone ring.

Her rehearsed greeting suggests a desire to speak, yet she lets the telephone ring. The contrast presents hesitation as a struggle between preparation and action.

Try it yourself

Which sentence is analysis rather than only summary?

Common mistakes

  • Do not let a quotation do all the argumentative work by itself.
Recall without your notes

What can you explain now?

For 'He polished the medal but never wore it', propose a claim and identify the contrast supporting it.

Compare with the explanation

He may value the achievement while feeling reluctant to display it.

Polishing suggests care, while not wearing it suggests restraint. Other readings may be possible; the claim should remain cautious because the motive is unstated.
