Imagery and its effects
Move beyond naming a technique to explaining a plausible effect.
Before you begin
- Inference from evidence
- Literal and figurative language
Notice the precise language choice
Imagery can evoke sensory experience or connect an idea with an image. A metaphor presents one thing in terms of another; a simile makes an explicit comparison, often using 'like' or 'as'. Naming the device is only a starting point. Look closely at the particular associations of the words and their place in the passage.
Connect detail, effect and interpretation
Explain how the image shapes tone, character or a larger idea. Avoid claiming that every reader must feel the same emotion. A strong interpretation is plausible because of specific words and surrounding context. It should say more than 'this creates an image in the reader's mind', which could apply to almost any descriptive phrase.
Worked example
Analyse the original sentence: 'By dusk, the empty station was a shell of echoes.'
Show the worked solution
- The metaphor 'shell' suggests a structure whose former activity has gone.
- 'Echoes' stresses lingering sound within emptiness.
- Connect those details to a possible atmosphere of absence or isolation.
The image presents the station as emptied of life, with only traces of former activity remaining.
Try it yourself
Which comment offers the most specific analysis of 'a shell of echoes'?
Common mistakes
- Do not substitute a technique label for an explanation of its effect.
What can you explain now?
Analyse: 'Hope flickered like a candle in the draught.'
Compare with the explanation
The simile suggests hope is present but vulnerable to being extinguished.
A candle's unstable flame in moving air supports both persistence and fragility. Explain that combination rather than only naming the simile.
